St. Louis - Explore the Gateway to the West
St. Louis lies right near the intersection of the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers, which made it a stopping point for most settlers moving west.
As the last big city before the long trails, the city became known as the Gateway to the West. Its proud heritage dates back to native mound builders
some thousand years ago and spans European fur traders, overland expeditions to the Pacific coast, and the development of steamboats and railroads.
Today's St. Louis plays a prominent role, nationally and internationally, in industry, finance and scientific research. It is also a cultural hot spot, with
an abundance of museums, art galleries, theatres, gourmet restaurants and a dynamic nightlife.
